Chapter One · The Diagnosis
01
Eighteen issues of drift — eleven type sizes, four unlicensed fonts, zero shared grid.
Atlas Review — Relaunch Brief  ·  Q1 2026

The audit

When we opened the last 18 issues side by side, no two features shared a measure — column widths ranged from 38 to 64 characters, breaking the rhythm the culture desk had spent years building.

The masthead had been redrawn six times by six different freelancers, each shipping a slightly different kerning table with no single source file.

The fix isn't a font swap. It's a tri-tone system — dusty pink, mustard cream, deep burgundy — locked to one grid, so every desk ships the same magazine.

— the rescue plan,
Atlas Review, Art Direction

Eight rules, locked to the grid.

§ 03 — Rescue Principles
/ 01

Baseline grid

12 columns, 84px module. Every photo, pull-quote, and caption snaps to it — nothing floats.

/ 02

Three inks only

Dusty pink, mustard cream, deep burgundy. No fourth color enters a spread, ever.

/ 03

Two display faces

Bricolage Grotesque for headlines, Instrument Serif italic for kickers and pull-quotes.

/ 04

Masthead is fixed

One drawn wordmark, one kerning table. Freelancers inherit it — they don't redraw it.

/ 05

Caption discipline

Every caption in JetBrains Mono, uppercase, 0.15em tracking. Captions read as data, not decor.

/ 06

Measure ceiling

52 characters per line, hard ceiling. Wide features split two columns before they cross it.

/ 07

White space budget

Every spread reserves 18% dead space, minimum. Density is a choice, not a leftover.

/ 08

Section labels

§ 0X, top-right, mono, every spread. Readers always know where they are in the issue.

§ 04 — The Page System
One grid, four page types.
84px
How the module works

Every spread is built from one 84px baseline module — the fixed unit for gutters, photo crops, and caption blocks. Four page types resolve to the same module, so pages 12 through 164 read as one object, not eighteen freelance interpretations.

§ 05 — Page System
brief → press
01
Draft the grid

Set the 12-column, 84px module before a single headline is typeset.

02
Lock the tri-tone

Dusty pink, mustard cream, deep burgundy — tested against every planned photo essay.

03
Pair the type

Bricolage Grotesque headlines against Instrument Serif italic kickers, no exceptions.

04
Build the templates

Feature opener, review grid, Q&A split, back-page index — four templates, one system.

05
Proof the full issue

Run all 164 pages through the grid before the art director signs off.

From brief to bound issue — every desk edits inside the same grid. Atlas Review · Issue 112
§ 06 — Proof

How the rebuild held up in proof.

A demo view of the proof pass across the first rebuilt issue — grid compliance climbing, off-grid elements dropping, caption errors clearing. Read the shapes; the real totals are on the next spread.

§ 07 — In their words
The grid stopped being a suggestion and became the one thing every desk could not violate.

Three short reads

Notes from the proof pass.

i.
On consistency Eleven type sizes became two. Every desk now typesets from the same faces, no exceptions file needed.
ii.
On cost Freelance kerning fixes dropped from six per issue to zero — the masthead file is now the only source.
iii.
On speed Full-issue proof time fell from four days to one, once every page resolved to the same 84px module.
§ 08 — Export Checklist
Everything a desk needs before it ships an issue.
